2010 National Conference Review by Dan Moriarty &
Presentation from Yoshi Makino of JMAC - 'Lean, Why Is It So
Hard'
20 Years of Difficulties & Successes with SA
Companies
Yoshiaki
Makino, Senior Consultant with Japan Management Association
Consultants (JMAC), has been a consultant with JMAC for 37 years working
with companies throughout Asia in industries ranging from shipbuilding
to agriculture. Yoshiaki also has had an ongoing association over a
20-year period with South Australian-based manufacturing companies
improving their labour and equipment efficiencies.
In this presentation,
Yoshiaki will reflect on his time supporting these companies with
observations of the difficulties and successes encountered from a
Japanese perspective in working with Australian companies. Where do
Australian companies struggle in implementing ongoing improvements? What
have been some recipes for success?
About the presenter

Yoshiaki Makino, or "Yoshi" as he is better known,
joined the Production Department of Japan Management Association
Consultants (JMAC) in 1973. JMAC is one of the leading process
innovation consulting firms in the world, as well as the oldest,
largest, and most respected consulting firm in Japan. In rising to the
rank of Senior Consultant, he supported many famous Japanese companies
to improve their operations.
Over the past two decades he has spent much of his time
supporting companies outside of Japan – particularly in South
Australia. Throughout the 1990s he worked closely with the South
Australian Centre for Manufacturing, Munzberg Consulting, and more
recently with the Australian Industry Group. In Adelaide alone has
provided training and consulting support for more than 20
companies.
Aside from his experience in other countries such as
South Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia and
Indonesia, he was also based in Shanghai for 7 years to establish JMAC
China and in Bangkok for 4 years to establish JMAC Thailand. He was the
President and then Vice-Chairman of JMAC Thailand.
