WORKSHOP
Laying the Foundations with Standardised Work
EVENT OVERVIEW
Standardised work as understood from the source, Mr Isao Kato.
In 2018 and 2019 groups from the TWI Institute spent time in Japan with Mr Isao Kato. Mr. Kato has entrusted the TWI Institute and its partners with the exclusive rights to extend his program so that, in his words, “…it is accessible to people outside of Japan.”
This program will provide a "unified theory" of standardised work and its relationship to TWI.
In this 4 Hour workshop you will experience:
- An overview of standardised work through the lense of Mr Isao Kato.
- The "why" and the "what" of the TWI skills of Job Relations, Job Instruction and Job Methods.
- The first thing.....“Without Work Standards there will be no standardised work” (Mr Kato).
- TWI skills being "pulled in" throughout standardisation.
Like many lean concepts we believe "standardised work" has been in some ways watered down and in other ways overcomplicated.
WHAT ATTENDEES WILL LEARN
Through this workshop you'll see a practical logical approach which will enlighten and help you understand how "standardisation" came to be in Toyota from 1950 onward. The principles applied stand true today.
PRESENTER
Oscar Roche
Oscar believes in 2 things that drive his endeavors in building capability. 1) people must have trust in his intent; 2) nothing is more effective and liberating than saying “I’m not sure” then learning by doing.
As Director of the Australian, New Zealand and South East Asian TWI Institute Global Partnership Oscar is mindful of these 2 things daily. He frequently quotes a manager he’s met who said “the more I know the more I realise I don’t know”. He feels that as long as he maintains that mindset he can be of service to others.
Finally, he loves Mark Rosenthal’s quote of “Teach to extend their Knowledge Threshold, not demonstrate yours.”

What our community is saying about this workshop
“I appreciate your insight to help us stabilise our processes. My expertise is focused on operations. The initial Step Up 1 work on product and equipment has helped me focus on what is important to the operators.”
Chris Gaechter, Continental Structural Plastics
"The elements of the workshop that were most useful to me were the breakdown of work standards, standard work and standardised work. Also, the job instruction information was of great use to me."
Nathan Keane, Saputo Dairy
"The workshop was practical and engaging (even in a virtual setting). Oscar provided an easy-to-understand overview of standardised work and TWI skills. He clearly defined and simplified the difference between work standards and standard work and, through practical examples and simulations, how to implement it in the workplace. As well as a basic introduction to the TWI job instruction, job methods and job relations."
Laura Robertson, AME Australia
